Hotter Than Judy

That's what I call the piece to the new Screw Comics! 4 cover. That's right, it's here! Inspired by one of my favorite album covers from one of my favorite music artists, I set out to make a piece that is equally gripping and dramatic as this:

It's certainly an image that has stayed in my mind since I saw it as a kid. I'm not sure how the idea came to me, but keeping with the story that's set in a scorching hot level of earth I found it fitting. And how the shape the of her hood flowing off her head could be like the shape of Stevie's braids, how could I not try it out?

Having the cover finished is a big step. Once you have that the rest of the book layout really falls together. Right now I'm in the proofing process, going thru and rereading the text, editing, and making sure the art is stable within the boundaries of the pages.

Heavy Duty Judy is back in this issue and it's gonna be a scorcher. Not sure who that is best to pick up issue 3, or pick up all 3 of the last issues here. I'll throw up presales once I send this to the printer and get a proof in hand. Yikes! It's coming together!

In a last ditch effort to promote the old books before the new one drops I've created the Screw Comics! Trilogy set for sale in the store. Order all books for $25 + shipping starting today. Now you don't have to choose between this one of that one, just snatch up all 3 at the price I sell them at tabling events and shows. Do it now!

Chugging Along

With things slowing down with the pandemic I've been able to make ample progress on my next book, Screw Comics! 4. The main story is 83 pages long and I've flying thru the post production and grey-toning of the pages at a regular rate, usually a page a day, which is fast for me cuz I find this whole grey-toning rather tedious. But i love the final product so I'm just bearing with it. Fortunately it's almost done. I'm a little more than halfway thru the main story's 4 chapters. So here's a peek of some of my fave panels so far!

Nah, there's no spoilers here! Besides by the time the book's ready you'll have forgotten all about this.

Yeah, I really love these grey tones! It's a fleshed out, finished effect on the art without having to do the time coloring or paying for color printing. Win win!

The first 3 issues of Screw Comics! are available in the store, both print and digital, links down below!

Making Miscreants

Here's what I've been doing all summer: working on the main story to Screw Comics! #4

The name of the story is The Miscreants of Time and it picks up some time after Heavy Duty Judy & the Two PJs in Screw Comics! #3 as well as right after Screw Comics 1 story Smoke & Mirrors. So were gonna have a major collision of wacky characters; Armstrong and Blindside will meet Evil PJ and Dark Judy in a dusty, doomed parallel Earth and somebody's gonna die, I'll tell you that.

Here are some penciled pages. I usually have a broad idea where the story is headed or I'll work from and outline, so I do all my writing in the penciling stage. The drawings are also very rough to also speed things along.

After the story has been read, and re-read and edited and all that, I'll reach a point where I'm ready to lay down some inks and do some permanent damage. I start with the lettering first, then borders, and then main figures.

2 page spread

After this point I erase lines and then fill in all the heavy blacks. Sometimes I'll use an ink well and a brush to do the finishes. After that and the pages are practically ready for post-production. Keep in mind there are 4 chapters to this particular story. I'm up to page 40-something with the writing/penciling part. I'll still haven't written the ending yet, even though I know how it's gonna end. A lotta times I'll have no clue how the execution of the ending is gonna come out so I don't rush it, I give it time, and sure, enough the perfect sequence will present itself and I can give the story a satisfying ending.

I've got a few other stories in the works for Screw Comics! #4, as well as other projects on my desk. Just making the most of Summer time!

The Coming of Gozer

We round up another year and I'm wrapping up another book. That's right y'all, Screw Comics #3 is ready to be sent to the press, barring a flawless pre-production proof and a final quote that tickles my fancy. This ish rounds out at 94 pages, and I plan to still slang 'em for 10 bucks a pop just to stick it to the man and the squares. Peep this new art and just try to tell me you're not the Key Master.

official cover for ish 3

the inside cover 'greetings' page, art in color,
set to be printed with verbiage in black and white

Plus other art to finish out this year:

Portrait of a Lilliputian Reading a Magazine

and a Guy Fox sketch for Guy Fawkes Day last month

And I think that's it. Until next year, Toonsters, take care and try to see how high you can get!

Armed and Creepy

As Screw Comics! #3 comes together like Voltron I had to throw in a comic about the creepy burglar. It's a story that's happened recently here in Houston, a young guy burglarized a home and just before he left he was staring at the baby in the crib for a minute or so. It was caught on tape and afterward everybody thought it was sooooo creepy. Granted it may be creepy but he didn't hurt the kid, and he left. As a deep thinker myself I had a different perspective on the event, and I drew it up in this comic, which is gonna make it in this issue.

Also, I'm trying out some new paper so I drew this.

I wanted to draw something detailed so I whipped some Magitek armor, you know, of Final Fantasy lore.

The new book is almost done. Just gotta obtain some old layout files from an old burnt out computer to lay it out. Plus I gotta contact my printer and let them know it's coming. Moving along!

ANNOUNCING!
Screw Comics! has gone digital! Now read and bask in the screwed up stories and comics right on your tablet or phone. I ported them to the popular .cbz format so they work in your favorite eComic Reader, Cloud Reader or any other app that can read .cbz files. And for only 2 bux a pop. They're even formatted for Retina displays; high definition, eye (and cherry) popping action!
From here on out expect for ALL my comics to get the digi-treatment. It's a tedious process, but it looks nice. Go buy these eComics now!

Eighty Eight Volts

Here's a preview of the headlining story in Screw Comics! #3. The first two issues I did grey tones right on the original art work. Recently though, due to variations in materials and scanning capabilities I wasn't sure how the grey tones would look with the type of paper I used. Instead of chancing it and possibly ruining all 61 pages of the original art, I decided to keep the art straight ink and do the greys digitally. Although the work is extremely tedious, the results are OUTSTANDING. Take a look. The name of the story is 'Heavy Duty Judy and the Two PJs'. If you picked up issue #2 then the 'Coming Next Issue' page filled you in. Plus, there's still time to cop issue two! ---------------------------------------->

Return of the King

And it's back!...the Original Layout. In case you're just tuning in for the last month and half I had a dynamic view set up on this piece, testing out possibilities of using this as an online portfolio thingy as opposed to an obvious blog format. Ideally, I would like to just have everything in one place and be done with the shit with a few clicks of a post. You know, between a "Professional Online Portfolio" and a working art blog, trying to combine them shitz. But it doesn't quite work out like that when my a portfolio includes my silly rantings like this or the Not Safe for Work work to potential, nee big wig corporate clients. I was hoping maybe it would, but we're not quite there yet. Anyhoo, I felt the whole format was a bit sterile and I never felt welcome to just post new stuff, or sketches or share anything. And so now here we are.
Been busy the month (such a cliche phrase nowadays). Projects are major but for private/secret clients so until further notice I can't really reveal anything. Hold up, let me check. In the meantime, check out these unseen Screw Comics! #3 shots (unseen if you haven't 'Liked' the FB page).
